Process modeling and analysis for interventional procedures in health care

The organization

Philips is a diversified technology company, focused on improving people’s lives through meaningful innovation in the areas of Healthcare, Consumer Lifestyle and Lighting. The company is a leader in cardiac care, acute care and home healthcare, energy efficient lighting solutions and new lighting applications, as well as male shaving and grooming and oral healthcare.

This thesis relates specifically to the business unit on Interventional Cardiology solutions. Minimally invasive treatment is increasingly common in hospitals, driven by the aspiration to lower the cost for the overall healthcare system, reduce patient trauma and realize better outcomes.  Minimally invasive procedures are performed through tiny incisions instead of one large opening. Because the incisions are small, patients tend to have quicker recovery times and less discomfort than with conventional surgery.

Philips is a world leading supplier of interventional X-ray equipment in the world. With this equipment, many different types of minimally invasive procedures are supported, such as stent placement for coronary diseases, heart valve replacements, neurology and oncology procedures. Assignment

Standardizing minimally invasive interventional procedures to improve quality of care and reduce cost becomes more and more important. To support this, Philips is innovating in gathering information on interventional procedure flows, defining standardized flows and checking compliance to standardized flows. Big data analytics techniques are also investigated for process mining such flows.

The objective for this assignment is to investigate solutions for modeling and analyzing the compliance of real-life processes for a number of minimally invasive procedures, to effectively support the health care professionals to perform such procedures. Building a (extension of an existing) prototype and evaluating it with knowledgeable stakeholders will be part of the assignment. It is expected that the main direction of the assignment will be to

  • investigate tooling to author workflow processes, also taking into account ongoing developments in Philips,
  • gain hands on expertise in state-of-the-art BPMN 2.0 compliance checking tools developed by researchers from the Information Systems group at TU/e,
  • observe real-life workflows, define process models and evaluate these with stakeholders,
  • check process compliance against available interventional procedure data,
  • improve the tool infrastructure where appropriate,
  • perform interviews with stakeholders to check usefulness of the proposed solution.

Potential

This project offers great opportunities both for a future job in industry as well as in academia. Specifically, the project is based on ongoing large scale collaborations between Philips Netherlands, Philips China, and TU Eindhoven.

Project Title: Development of a functional and technical specification for a new a Marine Vessel communication and planning tool.

Opportunity Statement:The Dow Supply Chain function is actively pursuing opportunities to provide the lowest cost to serve whilst meeting best in class levels of quality and reliability. The recently implemented SAP R3 ERP system (ECC) supports different functions in executing and improving their day to day operations and deliveries to its customers.

Dow’s global Marine Deep Sea vessel function, yearly shipping more than 14.000.000 Tons  of chemicals (the equivalent of 600.000 trucks) involving freight expenditures of more than 360 million Dollars, continues to be managed outside ECC. Hence, work process related information is mainly communicated and maintained by means of  Excel spreadsheets, emails and several other standalone tools (example MAPS).

Global Supply Chain leadership envisions to implement a Marine IT solution that would allow Dow to manage Deep Sea marine shipments using one global tool fully or partly integrated with Dow’s new ECC system.

This would improve the efficiency, quality and transparency of the Marine material flow work process, order to cash.

Project Scope & Boundaries:The scope of the project relates to defining the functional requirements on the systems side of the Dow global bulk marine work process integrating with functions which directly depend and/or interact with the process such as planning, site logistics, carriers, documentation, procurement etc. Also in-scope is the jetty/berth scheduling  capability for Dow jetty’s currently managed within MAPS.

Project Goal/Objectives:This charter embodies the project of drafting and defining the functional and technical specification for a Marine IT solution, possible integrated or interfaced with Dow’s ECC system.

The objective is that once Dow’s internal IT function (Diamond Systems Solutions) receives the go-ahead to design and implement a new marine solution, a specification  is available which can serve as base for the final design.

Timeline / Location:
–        4-6 months
–        Preferred start date: Q2 2015 ( but other timing can be discussed)
–        Location: Terneuzen. (local student-housing in Terneuzen will be provided)

Deliverables:The specification should encompass functional requirements, integrating the following process’, with functions between brackets:

  • Vessel planning and shipment initiation (Planning / Scheduling)
  • Vessel nomination and chartering (Marine Operations)
  • Vessel risk and suitability acceptance (Vetting)

Wil jij je afstudeerstage combineren met het opdoen van ervaring als consultant? Heb je affiniteit met informatiemanagement en ben je daarnaast geïnteresseerd in actuele maatschappelijke vraagstukken? Wil je ervaren hoe het is om bij een groot, toonaangevend adviesbureau te werken? Dan is een stage bij Berenschot iets voor jou!

Berenschot heeft voor een periode van vijf maanden plaats voor een stagiair(e) voor de adviesgroep Maatschappelijke ontwikkeling, zorg en informatiemanagement (MOZI).

Wie zoeken we?

Een ambitieuze student in de eindfase van zijn of haar studie, die onderzoek wil doen naar informatiemanagement vraagstukken die spelen bij onze klanten. Actuele thema’s die daarbij voor ons relevant zijn, public value van ICT en informatie, organisatie van de ICT en informatiefunctie, informatieveiligheid, digitalisering van de overheid en informatievraagstukken die spelen op het terrein van de verschillende decentralisaties van Rijk en provincie naar gemeenten.

De adviesgroep MOZI bestaat uit circa dertig professionals die zelfstandig en in teams opdrachtgevers adviseren. Te denken valt aan publieke partijen (rijksoverheid, provincies, gemeenten, gemeenschappelijke regelingen) en private en maatschappelijke organisaties (zorg‑ en welzijnsorganisaties, sw-bedrijven, culturele instellingen en onderwijsinstellingen). Daarnaast richt MOZI zich op organisatieadviesvragen op het vlak van kunst, cultuur en media, onderwijs, zorg en welzijn en informatiemanagement.

Performance measurements in the semi-process industry

The organization

Marel is an international supplier of advanced systems for the food processing industry. With around 3700 employees worldwide, Marel focuses on the segments of Poultry Processing, Further Processing, Meat and Fish. At its modern plant in Boxmeer, the operating company Marel Stork Poultry Processing B.V. focuses on the design, production and installation of production systems for the poultry processing industry. As the world market leader, the organization is constantly looking for opportunities to increase the productivity of its customers, within the bounds of quality and innovation. In addition to offices in Boxmeer (NL), Dongen (NL) and Gainesville (Georgia, USA), the organization has regional offices in a large number of countries.

Master Thesis assignment

The highly automated production lines of modern poultry processors process 13.500 broilers per hour. Each broiler has its own quality specifications and unique weight, which determines its destination and potential value. The destination of a broiler can end up in several different articles; a modern retail plant offers a variety of more than 500 product articles.  In order to make optimal use of the potential value of each individual broiler an information system is required. A lot of attention is paid to animal welfare, food safety, quality, full traceability, water and energy consumption. The aim is to add value to poultry as effectively as possible. The overall performance of a poultry processor is depending on a lot of factors, one of the indirect factors is production planning. Production planning on a daily level is a real challenge in the poultry processing industry. The uncertainty of the demand on one side and the dynamics of the raw material supply on the other side ask for planning skills of the processor. A lot of data and an information system are used to control the production. The exact impact of planning and scheduling is difficult to determine, but enhancements of the planning performance gains big advantages. Innova is the provided information system by Marel to support planners. For now we have an interesting Master Thesis assignment for an entrepreneurial student. In order to improve the planning performance on the long term, initially the performance should be measured in order to quantify possible improvements. The assignment is to set up a method to measure the production planning performance of a retail poultry processor. The business process of production planning is known and can be used as a starting point. Determining (key) performance indicators and an overview of required vs. redundant (available) data are the most obvious deliverables.

Preparations for GameBus are heating up!

While work on the GameBus project will officially start in January 2015, we are already making various preparations.  The most important preparation is the recruiting of two new group members.  One group member has been selected from the User System Interaction pool of PDEng trainees.  This member will focus on the end user experience as well as on the business model aspects of GameBus.  A second PDEng trainee was selected from the Software Technology pool.  This member will focus on the integration of game components on the bus.

Besides PDEng projects, we have defined two master thesis projects on GameBus.  One student will focus on GameBus business model aspects as part of a graduation in Innovation Management.  A second student will focus on GameBus backend aspects as part of a graduation in Business Information Systems.

A GameBus kick-off meeting will be organized as a side activity of the EIT ICT Labs Health and Wellbeing End-of-Year Event 2014.  In this way, we involve also our Italian partners in the preparations such that in January 2015 we can take a flying start!
